Ray Bradbury, an American writer, and poet were one of the most celebrated authors of speculative fiction in the 20th century. He wrote in many genres but is best known for his dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 (1953).
He was born on August 22, 1920, to a poor family. His father worked as a power station construction worker while his mother, a former schoolteacher, had been forced to take other jobs when she lost her teaching position. After dropping out of Los Angeles High School at the age of 16, Bradbury had spent much of his time reading and doodling during long afternoons in the library at the University of California. In a biographical essay on the author, Steven Spielberg described him as America’s “greatest living short story writer.”
