Isaac Newton (1643-1727) is best known for his contributions to physics and mathematics, but he also made contributions to optics and natural philosophy. Newton was born in Woolsthorpe, England. His father died before he was born and his mother remarried when he was three years old. At age 12, Newton received a scholarship to Trinity College at Cambridge University.

He began his research in mathematics and optics and later discovered the theory of gravitation while still at Trinity College when he observed an apple fall from a tree in an orchard as it ripened.

Newton is often considered one of the most influential scientists in history. He was responsible for developing calculus, classical mechanics, and laws of motion. Moreover, he discovered that white light consists of colors and studied the refraction of light through a prism.
