Kelly’s mom, Joanne, was a schoolteacher. With Kelly’s dad absent throughout his life, his mom raised him and three of their siblings by herself. Kelly himself was often abused as a little boy at the hands of another woman which he wrote about in his autobiography.

He was a talented basketball player during his school days at Kenwood Academy and even went on to play for the team at a high school in the suburbs of Chicago. He formed a group “MGM” (Musically Gifted Men) in 1989 with a group of his friends. They released their first single, “Why You Wanna Play With Me.”
